Noting that parents have a strong influence on their children's reading habits, he said, "It needs to start at birth - my wife and I read to our daughter every day." The Mayor and Mrs. Castro have also signed their little girl up for her first-ever Library Summer Reading Program.

Celebrate Juneteenth at Carver Branch Library!
In observance of Juneteenth, the Carver Branch Library, 3350 E. Commerce Street, will host a special appearance by actress/author Bern Nadette Stanis, best known for her role as Thelma on the hit TV series Good Times. The event will take place beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 19.
Ms. Stanis is also the author of Situations 101 and For Men Only, a book of poetry. She will participate in a panel discussion on "Images of Blacks in Media: Literature, TV and Film." The panel will also feature authors Caleb Alexander, Chris Cannon, Darine Davis, T.L. James, R.L. Sloan, Cynthia Toliver, Kimberly Kaye Terry, Tamika Newhouse and Lorraine Elzia.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (210) 225-7801.

The San Antonio Public Library wants your opinion!
As the next step in its strategic planning process, the San Antonio Public Library is conducting a public survey to gather community input on current library resources and services as well as new directions the library should take in the future. A questionnaire has been mailed to households throughout the City and County covering topics such as how people currently use the library, what needs exist for new resources and services, and what the priorities are for library service in the next five years. Both library users and non-users are included in the survey.
Library Director Ramiro Salazar emphasized the importance of responding to the survey. “Customer service is the highest priority of the San Antonio Public Library. As we plan the San Antonio Public Library of the future, it is essential to have input from the entire community, both those who use libraries regularly and those who use them infrequently or not at all. We ask that everyone who receives a survey complete and return it.” Mr. Salazar noted that, in order to ensure responses from a wide range of County residents, the survey was available in both English and Spanish.
The Community Needs Assessment survey is being administered by consultants ETC Institute and is funded through gifts and donations to the Library. For more information the public may call (210) 207-2631.

On May 26, the San Antonio Public Library will debut its new online calendar system. Provided by Trumba Corporation, whose clients include the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University and the New York Times, the calendar comes with a host of new features for SAPL patrons. Need a text message reminder of an event or want to share an event on your Facebook wall? The new calendar has got you covered.
The simpler design and search interface will make it easier for you to find your favorite story times, book clubs and special events both at the library and in the community. Please note that e-mail and RSS feed subscribers to the old calendar will need to sign up for new subscriptions in order to keep receiving information.
We hope the new calendar will fit your needs and the way you plan your schedule more closely, and help you keep up-to-date with everything that's happening at the San Antonio Public Library!
